It’s amazing what people can accomplish when they come together to protect a life—no matter the species. 🐘❤️

An elephant was found struggling to stay afloat nearly 10 miles out at sea. No one knew how much longer he could keep swimming.
The exhausted animal, later nicknamed “Jumbo,” had likely been swept out into the ocean by strong currents while crossing a lagoon between two jungle areas in Sri Lanka.

Spotted about eight nautical miles (15 kilometers) off the coast of Kokkuthuduwai, Kokilai by a Sri Lanka Navy patrol vessel, the elephant was fighting to stay afloat.
“They can’t keep swimming for long because they burn a lot of energy. And the salt water isn’t good for their skin, so in this case, the situation probably warranted human intervention.”

What followed was an extraordinary 12-hour rescue mission.
Navy divers, multiple boats, and officials from Sri Lanka’s Department of Wildlife worked together to save the struggling giant.

In dramatic footage released by the Navy, rescuers can be seen surrounding the elephant, with one sailor even climbing onto its back as the team carefully used ropes to guide it toward land.

Slowly, hour by hour, they escorted the exhausted animal back to shore.
“It was a miraculous escape for the elephant,” Navy spokesman Chaminda Walakuluge said. “The animal had likely got swept into the sea.”

Once safely back on land, Jumbo was handed over to wildlife officials to recover before eventually being returned to the wild.
For an animal that looked destined to disappear beneath the waves, it was a rescue few will ever forget. 🐘💙
