He’s going to meet some animal lovers inside no doubt.
Stella was a gentle 9-year-old Golden Retriever–Spitz mix living with her owner in an apartment complex in Stuart, Florida.
She trusted the people around her with everything—her home, her food, her safety and her life.
But on August 20, 2024, that trust was [br.uta.lly be.tra.yed]].
Outside the apartment, Stella was subjected to a [ho.rri.fyi.ng] act of [cr.ue.lty]. A doorbell camera captured Donald Arthur Stickens III, her owner’s boyfriend, suspending Stella above the ground by her [le.ash], dropping her onto the pavement, lifting her again by the neck and repeatedly [st.rik.ing] her head and face.
Stella had nowhere to run — She couldn’t defend herself — All she could do was endure the [pa.in] and [fe.ar].
Without that camera, what happened to Stella might have remained hidden.
Days later, the disturbing footage was uploaded to the apartment complex’s online portal and eventually came to the attention of law enforcement. The recording became the evidence Stella could never provide herself.
On August 27, deputies from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office visited the apartment and confirmed that Stella was the dog shown in the video. She was immediately removed from the home and placed in the care of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.
With assistance from the ASPCA, a forensic veterinarian examined Stella and analyzed the recording in detail.
The examination revealed just how [severe] the [at.ta.ck] had been. Five of the blows were delivered with enough force to move Stickens’ own body.
The veterinarian determined that Stella experienced significant [pa.in], extreme fear and [di.stre.ss], particularly as her airway was restricted. Her tucked tail and [de.spe.rate] open-mouth breathing showed the [te.rr.or] she was experiencing.
For investigators, there was no longer any doubt about what Stella had endured.
Stickens was [ar.res.ted] and [ch.arg.ed] with felony animal [c.ru.el.ty].
Nearly a year later, he appeared before Judge William Roby of Florida’s 19th Judicial Circuit to face the consequences of his actions.
The judge sentenced him to five years in [state] prison—the maximum [pr.ison] term allowed for the offense.
And for once, an animal [c.r.ue.lty] case did not end with a warning, a small fine or a punishment that seemed [pa.infu.lly] inadequate.
Stella received justice.
But the most important part of her story came after the camera stopped recording — Stella [survived]. ❤️
She was safely reunited with her owner. When the sheriff’s office announced the sentence, it also shared a new photograph of Stella.
This time, she wasn’t hanging from a leash or trembling outside an apartment.
She was standing beside the ocean — Safe — Free — And doing well.
The [fr.ighte.ned] dog seen in that [he.artbre.aking] footage had survived—and was finally able to enjoy the life she deserved.
The man who [hu.rt] her was going to [pr.ison].
Stella was going home to a life filled with love and care.
A camera captured the worst moment of Stella’s life.
But that same recording also preserved the evidence that ensured her [suffering] could not simply be ignored.
Stella could not walk into a [courtroom] and tell the judge what had happened — She could not speak to investigators — She could not ask for justice —The video spoke for her — The investigators acted for her. And the court delivered justice for her.
Today, Stella’s story is a powerful reminder that animals who suffer in silence still deserve to be heard.
Cruelty may happen behind closed doors and in the shadows, but sometimes, all it takes is one witness—or one camera—to bring the truth into the light.
Stella survived — Stella is safe.
And Stella finally received the justice she deserved. 🐾❤️
