The mailman had given his best friend the greatest gift of all. Was time and companionship 🥹❤️..was irreplaceable..😘😘
The dog stood behind a fence with an old tennis ball, ready whenever the familiar mailman arrived.
Their game was simple. The mail carrier threw the ball, the dog chased it and brought it back, and for a few minutes, the day’s deliveries could wait.
It became part of their routine.
The mail carrier came by with letters. The dog came to the fence with his ball. Neither needed to know what else had happened that day. They knew what to do when they saw each other.
Then one day, the mail carrier reached the house and the dog was missing from his usual place.
The owner came outside instead. In his hand was the worn tennis ball.
He told the mail carrier that the dog had died of old age. The game they had shared for five years was over.
But the owner knew it had meant something to both of them. He handed the ball to the mail carrier to keep.
For years, that ball had been the dog’s way of asking his friend to stay a little longer. Now it was something the mail carrier could take with him when he had to leave.
The next house on the route still needed its mail. At this one, there would be no dog waiting by the fence.
The little game was over, but the friendship had been real to the two who returned to it day after day.
