When keepers at the Shendiaoshan Wildlife Reserve initially witnessed the mother [stepping] on the newborn calf, they assumed it was a clumsy, accidental consequence of labor fatigue. Fortunately, Zhuangzhuang formed a resilient surrogate attachment to his primary handler.
While he bypassed the crucial social lessons taught within an elephant herd, the human intervention successfully stabilized his physiological health, allowing him to grow past his traumatic infancy into a healthy, thriving young elephant.
