Maybe his distant cousin but it doesn’t look like toothless! Looks more like a distant cousin of an owl to me.
Imagine walking through the rainforest and suddenly seeing a creature that looks like it flew straight out of How to Train Your Dragon. Not CGI. Not fantasy. A real bird. And yes, people were stunned.
Meet the Great Eared Nightjar, one of the strangest birds on Earth. Native to Southeast Asia, this mysterious bird has giant feather tufts on its head that look like pointed dragon ears or horns. Add its huge glowing eyes, wide mouth, and camouflage feathers, and it genuinely looks like a tiny mythical beast hiding in the forest.
During the day, it almost disappears. Its feathers are patterned like bark, dead leaves, and tree shadows, making it nearly impossible to spot when it rests on branches. You could walk right past one and never know a dragon bird was watching you.
But at night, everything changes.
The Great Eared Nightjar wakes up after sunset and becomes an expert hunter. It swoops silently through the dark, catching moths, beetles, and flying insects with its enormous mouth. Unlike birds with sharp beaks, this one uses a wide gape like a flying net. Nature really said, “Let’s make this one weird.”
And here’s the funniest part. Despite its intimidating fantasy look, this bird is harmless. No fire. No treasure hoard. No epic battles. Just a sleepy insect-eating bird with dramatic styling.
Many people online compare it to Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, and honestly… they’re not wrong. If Toothless became smaller, fluffier, and a little sleepier, this would be it.
Birds like this remind us that Earth is still full of creatures that look completely made up. We think dragons are extinct, but maybe they just got smaller and started eating bugs.
So next time someone says dragons aren’t real, show them the Great Eared Nightjar. Nature has been creating fantasy characters this whole time.
