Prayers for Bernard the Hedgehog 🙏💕🌺🌺
People need to learn that animals live in their piles of leaves and branches. Please Look before you burn.
On a chilly November evening in 2025, a pile of leaves and garden debris was turned into a bonfire for Guy Fawkes Night in the United Kingdom. But hidden inside was a tiny hedgehog who had unknowingly chosen the worst possible place to shelter.
His name became Bernard, and that night, his peaceful hiding place suddenly became a [de.ad.ly tr.ap].
As the [fl.am.es] spread, Bernard began [sc.re.aming] in [pa.in]. A nearby woman heard the [de.spe.rate] cries and noticed a small, [bu.rnt] creature desperately moving inside the [fi.re]. She quickly realized it was a hedgehog and rushed to save him.
For a hedgehog, curling into a tight ball is one of its main defenses. Its spines help protect it from [pr.eda.tors], so when [fr.ighte.ned], it instinctively rolls up and remains still. But against a raging [bonfi.re], that instinct can become [fa.tal].
Bernard had curled into a ball as the [fl.am.es] surrounded him, leaving him trapped in the [he.at and sm.oke].
The woman carefully pulled him from the [fi.re], wrapped him in a towel, placed him in a cardboard box, and rushed him to “Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Haddenham, England”.
When Bernard arrived, his condition was [cr.iti.cal]. He had severe [bu.rns] covering a large area of his spines and the skin underneath. He was also suffering from [sm.oke in.hal.ation] and [sh.0.ck]. The veterinary team knew his chances of survival were extremely low, but they refused to give up on him.
Bernard spent weeks in intensive care, receiving constant treatment and monitoring.
Then, slowly, things began to change.
He started eating again. His strength gradually returned, and tiny new spines began growing across the areas that had been badly burned. For the team caring for him, every new spine was a small victory.
Eventually, Bernard became strong enough to leave intensive care and move into an outdoor enclosure. There, he began learning how to live like a wild hedgehog again.
He loves his food, enjoys curling up beneath a warm towel for a cozy daytime nap, and has even surprised his caregivers with how fast he can swim during hydrotherapy.
But Bernard still has one important challenge ahead.
Before he can be released, the team needs to know whether he can fully curl himself into a protective ball again. That ability is essential for a wild hedgehog’s survival. If he cannot regain it, he may need to remain in a protected, semi-wild environment where he can live safely outdoors.
Everyone at Tiggywinkles has been rooting for Bernard since the day he arrived. After everything he endured, watching him recover has been incredibly rewarding. And if he is eventually strong enough to return to the wild, saying goodbye will be bittersweet—but it will also mean the rescue team has succeeded in giving him back the life he was meant to have.
Bernard was one of the lucky ones.
Every year, hedgehogs and other small animals hide inside piles of leaves, branches, and garden debris. When those piles are turned into bonfires, many of them never get the chance to escape.
That is why Bernard’s story carries an important warning.
Before lighting a bonfire, always check it carefully for wildlife. Even better, build the bonfire on the same day you plan to burn it rather than leaving the pile untouched for several days.
There are other simple ways to protect hedgehogs too: raise garden and football nets off the ground, provide ramps or gentle slopes around ponds so animals can escape, and carefully check long grass and overgrown areas before mowing or cutting them.
Bernard’s survival began with something incredibly simple: someone heard a strange sound and stopped to investigate.
That moment of awareness saved his life.
His story is a reminder that wildlife often lives quietly and invisibly around us. Sometimes, all it takes is looking a little closer, checking a little more carefully, and being willing to help.
For Bernard, that small act of kindness turned a night of fire into a second chance at life.
