What got the shelter staff was that he didn’t just want the cutest dog, he asked careful questions about how to keep Waylon healthy and safe. Nine years old.

When nine-year-old Cai walked into a Texas animal shelter, he was not dressed like a kid heading out to look at dogs. He was dressed like a boy attending the most important day of his life. A sharp, shimmering gold suit.

When someone asked him why, his answer was simple. This was a special occasion. He was about to meet his first ever dog.
Inside the shelter, Cai locked eyes with Waylon, a big, goofy, gentle pit bull who had been waiting for someone to choose him for ninety-five long days. For Cai, it was love at first sight.

Shelter staff were stunned by him. Rather than just pointing at the cutest dog, this nine-year-old asked careful, thoughtful questions about how to keep Waylon healthy and safe. He was not just adopting a pet. He was taking on a best friend.

And that is exactly what Waylon became. The two are now completely inseparable, attached like velcro, with Waylon greeting Cai with a giant hug every single day when he gets home from school.

Cai has even started sharing what he has learned online, gently encouraging people not to fear dogs like his just because of their breed.
Cai said: Some people are scared of Waylon because he’s a pit bull. I just wish for people not to be scared of him. Love him like I do.
