He drove 2,800 Miles to bring Hickory home—and on the Journeys that Followed, Hickory had a Place beside him!

What a true gentleman ☺️

Could there be happier faces together, an incredible story I wish could be repeated so many times!!!! ♥️
Imagine a world with more good people, like Mario, in it what a truly wonderful world it would be. A thousand thanks bud 🫠

Mario Rodriguez was making a delivery in California when his wife sent him a photograph of a dog sitting in a shelter nearly 2,800 miles away.
His name was Hickory. He was a 2-year-old pit bull at “Animal Care Centers of NYC”, and his name had been placed on the shelter’s [eu.tha.na.sia] list.

But when Mario looked at Hickory’s photograph, he saw more than a dog in [da.ng.er]. He saw a familiar face—one that reminded him of King, the beloved pit bull he had recently [lo.st]. The [gr.ief] of [lo.si.ng] King was still fresh, and something about Hickory stirred a feeling he couldn’t ignore.

Mario said: I couldn’t save him, but I’m gonna save a couple for him.
It was August 2018. Hickory was in New York, Mario was in California, and the distance between them seemed almost impossible to overcome.
Still, Mario refused to let that stop him.

He approached his employer and explained the situation. Together, they arranged a delivery route that would take him across the country. Then Mario called the shelter, told the staff he was coming for Hickory, and set out on a journey that would change both their lives.

For the next several days, Hickory was never far from his thoughts. Mario called the shelter every day to make sure the dog was still there. By the third day, the staff recognized his number and reassured him that Hickory was safe and waiting.

Mario kept driving.
After six days on the road, he finally arrived at the Brooklyn shelter. He parked his truck and hurried inside, eager to meet the dog he had traveled thousands of miles to save.

The moment they came face to face, Hickory began wagging his tail. He jumped up against Mario and covered his face with kisses, as if he somehow understood that this stranger had come all that way just for him.

For Mario, the connection felt immediate. The dog who had reminded him of the companion he had lost was now right in front of him, alive and ready for a second chance.
Mario completed the adoption paperwork, and Hickory climbed into the truck. After nearly 2,800 miles of separation, they were finally heading home together—to Georgia.

There, Hickory met Mario’s two other pit bulls, Cooper and Angel. He was a little shy at first, unsure of his new surroundings, but it didn’t take long for him to find his place. Within minutes, the three dogs were running around and playing as if they had known one another for years.

A veterinarian treated Hickory for a mild respiratory [inf.ect.ion], and soon he was settling into his new life.
But Mario’s world was not one that kept a dog at home while he traveled. His work meant spending long days on the road, and he had no intention of leaving his new companion behind.
So Hickory became his co-pilot.

The same dog who had once waited inside a shelter kennel now rode beside Mario across the country, watching the world unfold beyond the truck windows. They stopped at parks and farms along the way, where Hickory encountered horses for the first time and barked excitedly at cows.

At night, during those first days together, Hickory would curl up beside Mario in the truck, falling asleep as Mario gently petted him. Eventually, he grew comfortable enough to settle into his own dog bed.

Little by little, the frightened shelter dog became a confident traveling companion. Every mile brought another adventure, every stop created another memory, and every day gave Hickory something he might never have had: the certainty that someone had chosen him and would keep choosing him.

Mario had first looked at Hickory and seen a reminder of King. In his [gr.ief], he had hoped to give another dog the chance he wished he could have given the one he [lo.st].
Instead, he found a new friend with a story of his own.

He had driven nearly 2,800 miles to save a dog whose future was uncertain. But the journey gave him more than the chance to rescue Hickory. It gave him a companion to share the road ahead.

And from that day on, wherever Mario’s work took him, Hickory had a seat beside him—not as a reminder of the dog he had [lo.st], but as a beloved friend with a lifetime of new memories still waiting to be made.

A wonderful man and a wonderful dog find each other, what an incredibly beautiful story.
Thank you, Mario for being so kind and compassionate, you are a hero!!!

So happy for Hickory and Mario! 💙
Bless their hearts 💕🙏🙏
