Elephant was flipping cars in a rural neighborhood, and officials later realized it was because of what happened to her baby.
Late one night, people woke up to the sound of an elephant shrieking in the street.
When they looked outside, they saw her ramming parked cars, pushing them aside, and flipping one over like she was throwing a tantrum.
But wildlife officials quickly realized it wasn’t anger for no reason. It was [gr.ief]. Earlier that night, her calf had been [st.ru.ck] by a car and didn’t survive. After that, the mother elephant began moving through the road in [pa.nic], hitting vehicles as if she was searching for the one that took her baby away.
For hours, officials tried to keep people back and calm her down without [hu.rting] her. Eventually, when she grew [ex.hau.sted], wildlife teams safely sedated her and moved her to a sanctuary where she could be monitored, cared for, and hopefully heal around other elephants.
