Animals are not inconveniences. They are living beings trying to survive.
Just because they don’t have a voice doesn’t mean their lives matter less.
Every creature on earth has a role in the web of life. Some of the roles we easily learn – wolves, beavers, vultures, etc. Some are harder to discern – snakes, gophers, etc. Their space has shrunk drastically. The LEAST we can do is to allow them the limited space they now have…
Most only live about one to two years in the wild. They move through backyards, forests, roadsides, and neighborhoods after dark, searching for food while avoiding cars, dogs, predators, and harsh weather. Their lives are brief, but their role in nature is meaningful.
Opossums help clean the world around you. They eat pests, insects, [ca.rr.ion], and sometimes even [ve.nom.ous] snakes. They also help reduce ticks, which can carry [di.se.ase]. In their quiet way, they support the balance of the places they pass through.
Still, many people fear them because of how they look or because they appear at night. But opossums are usually shy, gentle animals. When [s.c.ar.ed], they often freeze, hiss, drool, or play [de.ad] because they want to survive, not [a.tta.ck].
Kindness can be simple. Give them space. Do not [ha.rm] them. Slow down when you see one near the road. Let them keep doing the work nature gave them.
Opossums may not live long, but they leave the world cleaner than they found it.
Opossums are great, even if they didn’t do anything special, but they do so much incredibly that benefits humans making our lives safer in the process . They are our only native marsupial, and I hate the fact that they have such hard lives..
If you have possums in your neighborhood, you are lucky. They are night’s cleaner uppers. If you are a slob and leave garbage laying around or not covered, they can be a nuisance. If you are smart, they are a blessing.
