At Brights Zoo in a quiet corner of Tennessee, welcomed the birth of a baby reticulated giraffe, but with a stunning twist.
She has no spots. Just a smooth, chocolate-brown coat unlike anything seen in decades.
Giraffes are usually born covered in their unique spot patterns, which help them blend into the savanna. But this calf, born on July 31, 2023, has none. Experts say she’s likely the only spotless giraffe alive anywhere on Earth. And only been seen a handful of times in recorded history — and never quite like this.
The last known case? A similar birth in Japan in the 1970s – over 50 years ago.
Her birth is not only a genetic curiosity but also a reminder of the fragile state of her species. Reticulated giraffes, native to the Horn of Africa, have seen a 50% population decline over the past 35 years. Only around 16,000 remain in the wild today.
She’s healthy, thriving, and already inspiring a global conversation about the future of her wild cousins, whose numbers have dropped by more than half in the past 35 years.
After over 40,000 people from across the globe voted, this rare giraffe calf was name “Kipekee”, meaning “unique” in Swahili.
